16th century SPANISH school, workshop of Luis de MORALES (1509/1510-1586) Virgin and Child with Spindle Oak panel, one board, not parqueted. 45 x 32.5 cm Provenance : Anonymous sale, Paris, Hôtel Drouot (Me Cagny), March 20, 1995 ; Collection of Monsieur and Madame A., in their Hôtel particulier near the Champs-Élysées; By descent to the present owner. Related works: The composition is known from three versions painted by Morales, one of which is kept at The Hispanic Society of America in New York (see I. Bäcksbacka, Luis de Morales, Helsinki, 1962, no. 12, reproduced fig. 18). He takes his inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci's painting, La Vierge au rouet, the idea of the spindle whose arms form a cross.
