Riche et originale cheminée Napoléon III en marbre...

Price on request

Rich and original Napoleon III mantel in Carrara marble with caryatids and a man in profile. This beautiful and original Carrara marble mantel was realized in the second half of the 19th century, most likely at the request of a wealthy patron. Originally placed in an apartment in the town of Tarare, near Lyon, it is highly likely that its patron was an industrialist who had made his fortune in the textile industry, the town being renowned for its muslin and velvet since the second half of the 18th century. He could have been Hippolyte Champier, founder in 1884 of the Champier textile mills in Tarare. The entablature is typical of the Louis XV style, with its serpentine shape underlined by an oblong molding. It is adorned in the center with a medallion carved with the profile of a man with a moustache, almost certainly the person who commissioned this impressive mantel. The medallion is framed by finely carved bouquets of acanthus leaves and flowers. The feet flanking the entablature take the form of nude caryatids, whose facial features are very masculine and whose arms are gracefully raised above their heads. They rest on a pedestal adorned with roses and support a basket of grapes and vine leaves. This mantel is sold with a modern cast-iron insert, but without a hearth floor. This can be made to order (subject to marble availability).
