David d'Angers (1788-1856), Pierre-Jean David, known as. Profile portrait of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Bronze medallion. Inscriptions on the work, lower center: "DAVID / WEIMAR / 1829"; left: "GOETHE". 1829. Diam. 24cm. David's relationship with the great Goethe was symptomatic of the Angevin artist's admiration for German art. The sculptor's correspondence reminds us that there were many cultural exchanges with Germany, despite the conflicts between the peoples. Today, Goethe's portraits are not only considered absolute masterpieces of the Romantic school, but among the most important David ever created.
