David d'Angers (1788-1856), Pierre-Jean David, known as. Portrait in profile of the poet, Alfred-Louis-Charles de Musset-Pathay, 1831. Sand-cast single-face medallion. Signed and dated: "DAVID 1831". Inscribed: "ALFRED DE MUSSET". Diam. 16.5 cm. The poet and dandy is shown, beardless, with his hair cropped on the nape of his neck and abundant on his forehead and temples. Seen from three-quarters of the way up, almost full-front, he has a small, haughty pout. The nose and eyebrows are beautifully defined. The eyes look away, charged with all the virtuosity of language and imagination conducive to literary creation, as well as the tragedy of sprawling genius.
