Daum

Price on request

Daum brothers, lion rampant vase, circa 1893 This lion vase was made by the Daum glassworks. It was presented at the World's Fair in Chicago in 1893, without a vermeil base. Founded in Nancy in 1878 by Jean Daum, the Daum glassworks were soon taken over by his sons, Auguste and Antonin. From then on, increasingly technically complex creations were designed. A "rampant" lion in red agate, enhanced with gold, stands out against a red granite background, revealing in places a second layer of green glass. The back of the vase is completely open to this second green granite layer, decorated with heraldic motifs in the form of an inverted chevron. The neck of the vase features the same treatment as the lion. The base is in vermeil (gilded silver). The vase is signed "Daum / Nancy / ☨", under the base. The interplay of layers, colors and rendering of materials make this vase a fine example of the excellence of Daum glassmaking in the last years of the 19th century. Another example of this vase was sold at Tajan in 2015. This one shows slight variations in the hollowing of the glass. The green glass layer is more apparent around the leonine figure.
