Ludovico POZZOSERRATO (c.1550-c.1603)
The death of Adonis
On its original canvas.
94 x 104 cm
This painting depicts the death of Adonis, accompanied by his hunting dogs. Venus on the left, horrified by the discovery of her lover's body, mourns surrounded by lovers.
A pupil of Martin de Vos in Antwerp, Ludovico Pozzoserrato, also known as Ludovico Toeput, decided on the advice of his master to study in Italy, first in Venice at Tintoretto's studio, then in Rome and Florence, before settling in Treviso, where he produced frescoes and large-scale decors, making him one of the creators of Mannerist landscape painting.
Our composition is typical of Pozzoserrato's Italian work, in which the setting takes center stage, with the dense vegetation of the forest framing the scene and blending with the architecture.
The figures are also characteristic of the artist, with their massive, curvaceous bodies. The figure of Adonis can be likened to that of the Good Samaritan in the Treviso biblical history fresco.
