Jules-Emile ZINGG (1882-1942). The ploughman. Oil on canvas signed lower left (chips, missing parts). Height 55 - W 74 cm Note: born in Montbéliard, the countryside and scenes of toil in the fields remain a central theme in his work. In search of motifs, he criss-crossed France, passing through Brittany where he met Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier. The influence of the Nabis can now be felt in his later works, as well as that of the "ploughman". Jules-Emile Zingg abandoned his classical training with Fernand Cormon at the Beaux-Arts in Paris in favor of a more modern, synthetic touch.
