Svend Åge Madsen’s sleek and simplehardwoodfurniture captures the essence ofScandinavian modernstyle. Having studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, he began designing in the late 1950’s and was most prolific in the 1960’s. Madsen won several awards for his work, including the Gold Medal at the Milan Triennale in 1957 and the Lunning Prize in 1961. He used woods with qualities of warmth and richness such aswalnut, teakandrosewood. His distinctive designs are characterized by curving and sloping forms, giving each piece a natural and organic appeal. While he rarely used decorative embellishments, the bowed surfaces, arching drawers, and legs shaped like boomerangs added a visual flair.
