THE SUPER GUPPY FLOOR LAMP, by MARC NEWSON, 1987, in lacquered steel, 285cm (h), baring Idee label.
Provenance: Artcurial, Paris Auction - 20th Century Interiors, 11/3/2008 (lot 365), where acquired by the present owner.
This was Marc Newsom's first lighting design, conceived in 1987, during his time working with Idée in Japan.The floor lamp is fabricated using existing elements found in a Japanese builders’ merchants. The aluminium and glass industrial lamp attaches to a vertical, curved aluminium tapered tube, supported on a base consisting of a curved aluminium tube cross-bar on castors with a tapered stabilising aluminium arm extending at right angles from the centre of the cross-bar to floor level.
“I’d always loved Castiglioni’s ready-mades and once I got to Japan I was really excited by all the cool stuff in the builder’s stores. I found this factory that did great street lamp fittings. So I got a lamp and put on this piece of tubular steel…”
