Louis XIII. After the issue of the penultimate gold ecu with the Sun, a new reform was needed to eliminate the Spanish "pistole" so dear to Molière, notably in Les Fourberies de Scapin. In 1640, Louis XIII created the louis d'or, weighing two écus of the old system but with 22 carats of fine gold (916°/°°), the title of the Spanish pistole. Jean Warin (1604-1672), an engraver from Liège, instituted the use of pendulum coinage at the Monnaie du Moulin de Paris in the Louvre.
