LOUIS XIII 1610 - 1643
Demi-louis d'or mèche longue (without bay/IMP star)
1642 Paris (3.37 g) ♦ Gad 57
Superb/Very beautiful.
The art of portraiture continued under Louis XIV, and a multitude of types show us the royal effigies meticulously studied according to the age of the sovereign: child with the short fuse then the long fuse, juvenile, adult and elderly. The heavy burden of Louis XIV's wars weighed heavily on the monetary system. Metals, gold and silver, were in short supply for minting. An ingenious operation known as "reformation" was resorted to. Thanks to advances in mechanical engineering, the coins of the early reign did not have to be recast, but were instead overprinted with the new type. Reformations are identified by a particular symbol (star, trefoil, crescent, shell, rosette....). Sometimes, previous issues have left visible traces.
