An Ivory Attributed to Leonhard Kern

Discovered during an inventory by auctioneer Agnès Carlier, this early 17th century ivory relief is thought to be the work of the much sought-after German sculptor.

With a depth of 2 cm (0.8 in.), this ivory relief is the work of a master. In the foreground, Christ lies naked on the Holy Shroud; kneeling at his feet, Mary Magdalene kisses his knee; the Virgin prays…
