France’s leading private modern and contemporary art foundation, which boasts a new extension, has been an incredibly dynamic place for 60 years.
Gallerists, collectors and, after 1936, publishers Marguerite and Aimé Maeght always had close relationships with avant-garde artists, to the point where they even set up a foundation for them. “After my uncle Bernard died in 1953,” says Gallery Director and Foundation CEO Isabelle Maeght, “Braque, Miró, Léger and the gallery’s other artists urged my grandparents and parents, Adrien and Paulette Maeght, to create ‘a modern place to exhibit modern art’. Having seen Miró’ s studio designed by Josep Lluís Sert in Palma de Majorca, my grandfather asked the c atalan architect to create a bright building for his property in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. Using simple local materials and designed in collaboration with Giacometti , Miró, Braque and Chagall, it was completed in less than three years.
