Alexej Von Jawlensky (1864-1941)

Alexej von Jawlensky’s search for the ideal face led him to Expressionism; but the Russian artist began his mystical journey with a moving, lost-and-found portrait of a jewish man in prayer.

Having spent 100 years in a private collection, the oil painting Woman with Flowers in Her Hair (1913) will be sold at Ketterer Kunst auction house in Munich on Monday and is estimated to fetch between $2.5M and 3.5M. Alexej von Jawlensky (1864-1941) was an important member of the Der Blaue Reiter group.

The gallery, based in Basel, will open a new space in a historic building in the Karlsberg area of Copenhagen on December 10. Directed by Mamie Beth Carie, the gallery intends to attract both a Scandinavian audience and an international audience.

The artist, author and curator born in Germany in 1963 died after a long illness. Her research work was mainly concerned with cultural production in postcolonial societies and architecture. Since 2006, she had been teaching at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts.

The Boston auction house RR Auction is offering a series of letters exchanged between the former president and his Swedish mistress, an aristocrat he met in Cannes a few months before his marriage. The eight pages, from the personal collection of Gunilla von Post, are expected to fetch $30,000.

The curators of the Berlin Print Cabinet, the diplomat-collector Friedrich von Nagler and the New York art dealer Richard H. Zinser all had this rare Crucifixion by German printmaker Martin Schongauer in their hands.

Astrid Ullens de Schooten Whettnall was born into a family that entertained the doctor and writer Georges Duhamel, soprano Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and conductor Herbert von Karajan. A contemporary art and photography collector, she created the Fondation A Stichting 10 years ago.

The wax bust, bought in 1909 for the Berlin Royal Museums by Wilhelm von Bode, had been identified by von Bode as a Leonardo da Vinci. The conclusions of researchers at the French CNRS have refuted this claim 100 years later. Carbon-14 dating proves that the work could not have been produced before 1704.

From September 16 – October 28, the Smithsonian will broadcast six lectures from art historians, scientists and artists, centering Alexander von Humboldt’s writings on art and nature, their impact on American cultural identity, and their relevance today amid ecological uncertainty. This donation from the association to the Museum of Modern Art, the largest in the last 5 years, consists of works by 15 artists working in France, such as Ulla von Brandenburg or Julien Berthier. They will be exhibited from October 22 to January 4 in the Centre Pompidou's contemporary collections.
