Christian Boltanski (1944-2021)

One of the most important French contemporary artists, honored by a retrospective at the Centre Pompidou in 2019, entitled "Faire son temps" ("Doing His Time"), died yesterday at 76 years old. His films and installations evoke memory, absence and existential angst in the face of death.

Christian Boltanski, who passed away on July 14, left a number of iconic works that will be exhibited simultaneously by the Centre Pompidou, the Opéra Comique, the Château de Versailles and the Louvre starting October 12. They will be visible in places such as the Chapel of Versailles or the plaza of Beaubourg.

A series of exhibitions and events at Paris’ Centre Pompidou, Louvre Museum and the Chateau of Versailles will honor the late French conceptual artist. These will include a restaging of the opera Fosse – devised by Boltanski, Jean Kalman and Franck Krwczyk - on October 12 at the Pompidou. (TAN)

Born to Ukrainian Jewish parents who fled the Nazis, "Christian (Boltanski) would never have agreed to present an exhibition in this context," said his heirs, canceling the event that was scheduled to open in St. Petersburg today.
