The stars of this classic sale, a roll-top desk and an architect's table, have a significant point in common: their creator, David Roentgen.

With all the lots sold for a total of €82M, this first day of the sale set Christie's 2nd record for a private collection. The stars of the evening: Woman Walking, a bronze by Alberto Giacometti, reached €27M while the Louis XIV period rolltop desk by David Roentgen and François Remond fetched €2M.

The sale organized by Daguerre on September 17 (for the library) and 18 (for the castle’s remaining content) piqued the interest of institutions: the BNF has preempted a book of hours from the 15th century and the Condé museum an anonymous illustration from the 18th. A David Roentgen roll-top desk reaped €130,000.

Known as “La Belle Juliette”, Jeanne-Françoise Julie Adelaïde Récamier (1777-1849) boasted not just beauty, but great literary and artistic talent, and political spirit. Her salon was a cornerstone of intellectual circles from the start of the French Consulate right through until the last days of the July Monarchy.

After hiring Kyla McMillan as the director of the New York gallery owner David Zwirner recruited Ebony L. Haynes, a gallerist who is a black woman, to head a new commercial gallery in Manhattan, scheduled to open next spring. The gallery will have an all-black staff. (NYTimes)

The gallery has just signed a lease on a space in Los Angeles not far from the mini-gallery network anchored by Jeffrey Deitch and Regen Projects. It will be run by Robert Goff. Only a week ago, Zwirner revealed another new location in Tribeca. (ARTnews)

With its delicate neoclassical landscape marquetry, this piece is a rare example of Spanish furniture from the reign of Carlos III (1759-1788), especially since it bears the coat of arms of a prominent court figure.

An exhibition at the David Zwirner Gallery in Manhattan features 18 works by American artist and Abstract Expressionist, Joan Mitchell. Film maker, David Lynch, will join the roster of Pace Gallery – one of the world’s biggest galleries, with nine locations worldwide.
