Large parts of the late Karl Lagerfeld’s estate are being auctioned in Monaco December 3-5, and Paris, December 14-15. Around 1000 pieces from his various homes will be sold, including contemporary design pieces by Ron Arad, Art Deco pieces by André Mare, a Balloon Dog by Jeff Koons, and three Rolls-Royces. On Friday, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) announced the Costume Institute’s Upcoming Exhibition, “Karl Lagerfeld: A Life of Beauty.” The show focuses on the designer’s style and working methodology from the 1950s through to his final show in 2019. It begins May 5, 2023, and runs through July 16. 

After 14 years leading the Ludwig Museum, Friedrich has taken a position as collection director at the Jewish Museum in Berlin. Friedrich is known particularly known for her commitment to restitution: in 2017 she restituted Egon Schiele’s Crouching Female Nude to the heirs of its Jewish owners.

Last week, the second live sale of a three-part auction series dedicated to the estate of the late German designer Karl Lagerfeld generated €4.4 million in Paris, bringing the series’ total to $18.4 million thus far. Items included a black Chanel lambskin bag, a Dior Homme jacket, and several of his illustrations. 

The curators of the Berlin Print Cabinet, the diplomat-collector Friedrich von Nagler and the New York art dealer Richard H. Zinser all had this rare Crucifixion by German printmaker Martin Schongauer in their hands.

Karl Lagerfeld died on February 19, 2019, leaving behind a legacy as an illustrious figure in international fashion, as well as that of an artist, photographer, designer and draughtsman.

In 1972, the company first registered the smiley as a trademark thereby taking commercial ownership of the logo. Now, it is one of the world’s top 100 licensing businesses. The 50th anniversary launches 65 new partnerships and collaborations with everyone from Reebok to Karl Lagerfeld. (Guardian)
