Keith Haring (1958-1990)

“Fiorucci Walls”, a massive panel made by Haring and artist LA II in 1983, is now on view at the New York City Center in Midtown Manhattan. The painting is currently on loan from the MACo Museum of Chang Mai for the theater’s 2021-22 season, and audiences will be able to admire it during intermissions. (HA)

The Broad Museum will exhibit the city’s first Keith Haring museum show in May. “Art is For Everybody,” focuses on Haring’s life and activism: it features 120 works from the late 1970s to 1988 as well as archival material, such as journals, which provide a personal insight into the artist’s thoughts. After a recent donation of $3.2 M, Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, will reinstall a Keith Haring work on the wall of a professor’s office which was made more than 40 years ago. Working in collaboration with the late New York artist’s estate, Dr. Martens has unveiled a new line featuring a selection of Haring’s most iconic illustrations. This isn't the first time the British footwear brand has used the work of a deceased artist – last summer, they worked with the Jean-Michel Basquiat Estate.

The work was painted in 1989, when the building, currently slated for demolition, housed a nightclub—since the club’s closure, it has been housed by a billiards hall. The site is to become a retirement home, and the city of Barcelona has pledged to save the Haring, potentially within the new development. (The Guardian)

Longtime Manhattan art collectors Dr. James Cottrell and Mr. Joseph Lovett donated the works to the Grey Art Gallery at New York University. The collection includes works from Jean-Michel Basquiat, Mapplethorpe, Keith Haring and Donald Baechler. Accompanying the donation is a newly named gallery and study center.

Angel Pereda has been taken into custody and charged with wire fraud after prosecutors accused him of attempting to sell works fraudulently attributed to Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. Philip Righter of California was sentenced to 5 years in prison for attempting to sell forged works by Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat for more than $6 million to a gallery in Miami, according to the AP. Selling forgeries from 2016-2018 Righter faked provenance and other documents to deceive buyers.

Born in Geneva, Illinois, Cortez was central to Downtown New York’s vibrant art scene during the 1980s. This was in large part due to his 1981 “New York/New Wave” show, which showcased a new generation of artists who had not yet received mainstream attention—it included Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
