Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine (1762-1853)

It is only fitting that this work by Pierre-François-Léonard Fontaine has returned to the museum for which it was made: the Louvre.

A set of three portfolios of projects that come directly from Pierre-François Fontaine’s library via his descendants attest to the two architects’ vision and show the changing urban fabric of Paris.

Among 30-odd architectural drawings from the collection of a private mansion in Binic, this project for the Louvre by Pierre Fontaine is worth a look.

On Friday, at the drawing sale orchestrated by Ader, a watercolor by Pierre Fontaine (1762-1853), dated to 1817, sold for €44,800. Known for his long collaboration with Charles Percier, the two worked on the design of the interior spaces of the Louvre at the time this drawing was made.

A few hours before Drouot's winter closing, the Château of Fontainebleau preempted a collection of 41 plates (including the layout of the Chaillot mountain) by Pierre François Fontaine for €140,800. Another collection by the same author, composed of 51 projects, fetched €244,720.

Cherished by its aesthete owner, Pierre Guénant, the Château de Beaulieu plays on its Provençal charm while cultivating the air of a Venetian palace.

Painted when the artist was not yet famous, this seaside subject puts people at the center of the composition.

Mankind's most magnificent conquest was Alfred de Dreux's chief source of inspiration. A passionate horse lover, the artist celebrated them with some of his finest works.

As this portrait attests, Léonard Limosin was an enameler to great statesmen and kings, starting with French King, Francis I (r.1515-1547).

Part one of the dispersal of the T. library will feature many works by the French fabulist, notably this famous 18th-century illustrated edition.
