Pierre OUTIN On the Cliff - Pierre OUTIN (1840-1899) Pierre OUTIN (1840-1899) "On the Cliff An oil on canvas Signed and dated lower right: "OUTIN 78 L: 102 cm x W: 60 cm (SC) L: 115 cm x H: 75 cm (AC) Bibliography : Son of a rich merchant, he studied at the high school of Moulins where he learned drawing. He studied with Lecointe and Cabanel. He was a very gifted student who won first prize in the competition for the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1863. He made his debut at the Salon in 1868. In 1874 he made a long stay in Algeria. The African land fascinated him, the colors of the cities, the brightness of the streets and the oriental clothes were such a change of scenery that on his return to France, his paintings had a richer and more nuanced color palette. He obtains a medal of 3rd class in 1881 for: the Emigrant, then a second class with : Episode of the rout of Quiberon in 1889.
