Paul Sormani Charming table with movement by P. Sormani France Circa 1870 Satinwood, Violet wood, Gilt bronze Height: 72 cm; Width: 88.5 cm; Depth: 45 cm Signed on the lock P. SORMANI PARIS 10 rue Charlot Charming Louis XV-inspired table in satinwood and violet wood, opening with three drawers in the waist. The top, adorned with floral marquetry in butt-wood, is encircled by a moulding. It stands on four cambered legs adorned with chased and gilded bronze falls and sabots. Biography: Paul Sormani, born in Italy in 1817, died in 1877. Initially specialized in the manufacture of kits and small pieces of fancy furniture, in 1854 he set up his workshops at n°114 rue du Temple in Paris. The house of Sormani soon enjoyed great success, becoming highly appreciated by Parisian high society and the imperial family itself. Empress Eugénie decorated her palaces and various residences in the styles of the Ancien Régime. She invariably called on Sormani's fine creations. Sormani presented his work at all the major national and international exhibitions, such as the Exposition des Produits de l'Industrie in 1849 and the Parisian World Fairs of 1855 and 1867, where Sormani was honored by the juries and won the highest awards for his "production which reveals a quality of execution of the highest order". Following the 1867 Exposition Universelle, Sormani expanded and moved to 10 rue Charlot, where his workshops took on their full importance. Paul-Charles Sormani, Paul's son, born in 1848, worked with his father, then after the latter's death, continued with his mother, under the name Veuve Paul Sormani et Fils in Paris. After the 1914 war, they joined forces with Thiébaux and the company moved to 134 boulevard Haussmann, where it remained until 1934.
