EUGENE HAZART Charming clock by E. Hazart France Circa 1880 Signed Eug Hazart in Paris Patinated and gilded bronze, cherry red marble Height 55 cm; Width: 17 cm Beautiful patinated and gilded bronze clock whose cylindrical dial, adorned with a trophy of love, is supported by a kneeling love. The whole rests on a cherry-red marble base encircled by a laurel ribbon, set on a gilded bronze counter base. This model of putto clock was very popular in the second half of the 19th century, and other examples signed by the bronzemaker Henry Dasson (1825-1896) can be found around 1880. Biography Eugène Hazart was a Parisian bronzemaker, a member of the Réunion des fabricants de bronze from 1839 and a member of the Commission sur la propriété des modèles. Known as early as 1843 for copying antique styles, executing bronzes "in the Gothic and Renaissance taste on furniture, porcelain, groups, statuettes, etc.", he is still renowned for his reproductions of 18th-century works. He moved to 122, rue Vieille-du-Temple (from 1843), then to 12, rue St-Gilles, Marais (1856) and finally to 16, rue St-Gilles, Marais (1864). He was a much-appreciated artist, appearing in 1884 in the suppliers' book of Pannier Frères, head of the famous firm "A l'Escalier de Cristal", merchant-publisher of porcelain, crystal and furniture, located in the Palais-Royal and made famous throughout the 19th c. by its brilliant performances at the "Exposition des Produits de l'Industrie".
