"Woman at the Fountain", France, Circa 1880 Numbered 359/576 on the back Height: 115 cm; Base width 37 x 30 cm An important sculpture in patinated terra cotta, featuring a young servant girl filling her jug at a fountain. The lower part of the fountain features a lion's head (from which the water gushes out), topped by a truncated fluted column on which a plant with five lights curls. Terracotta prints almost always bear a model number, and more rarely the number or tantième drawn, indicating the size of the production, in this case a limited edition. Originally, the sculptor's signature never appeared on terracotta editions. It was not until the end of the 19th century that artists demanded that their names appear alongside those of the publisher. Bibliography : Les Orientalistes, Dictionnaire des sculpteurs, Stéphane Richemond, Ed. de l'amateur, Paris, 2008, p°61.
