Pair of candlesticks, France, 18th century Height 26.5 cm; Diam. 14 cm A delightful pair of silver-plated bronze baluster candlesticks featuring a faceted shaft deeply carved with fluting, supporting a fluted spigot. Each candlestick rests on a wide, stepped circular base with corrugated edges. The wick is removable. Comment Sconces, chandeliers, candlesticks and candelabras, used to light spaces, developed considerably during the 17th century. In the following century, ornamentalists brought a new vivacity to the decorative arts, liberating them from the Classicism of Charles Le Brun, and paving the way for the Regency style, which was more intimate and lighter.
