Philibert Louis DEBUCOURT The Judge or The Broken Jug. DEBUCOURT Philibert Louis (Paris 1755 † Belleville 1832) Original etching and drypoint. H322(425)xL410(580)mm. Old restorations on the edge of the margins and rare small scattered foxing. Small indentation of the paper at lower right under the man's legs. Ref: I.F.F 18th & Fenaille, n°1. State proof without any letters, on watermarked laid paper. Very rare. The BNF holds a similar proof (inv. n°Réserve FOL-EF-98 (1)). Unfinished plate engraved by Debucourt after his painting "Le Juge de Village", which he exhibited at the Salon of 1781. Only rare proofs were made of the plate. The Goncourts owned one, which went to their 1897 sale (no. 13). It is mentioned in "Maison d'un artiste" (Tome II, p.115): "The only etching we know of by him [Debucourt] is the state of an etching of 'Le Juge ou La cruche cassée', which he amused himself by making for the engraving by Jean-Jacques Leveau. A curiosity, but only a curiosity" (I.F.F).
