G. Fabre Génie des Arts" trim by G. Fabre, France, circa 1900 Dial signed G. Fabre, 4 rue des Filles du Calvaire, Paris Movement signed Samuel Marti - Gold Medal 1900 Clock / Height : 47 cm ; Width : 40 cm ; Depth : 13 cm Candelabra / Height. 50 cm; Width: 26 cm; Depth: 14 cm Beautiful Louis XVI-style ormolu and white statuary Carrara marble set, comprising a clock and a pair of candelabra. The clock is surmounted by two putti, leaning against the dial, representing the "Geniuses of the Arts", i.e. Poetry and Painting. The base is adorned with neoclassical decorative elements such as scrolls, rows of pearls and leafy feet. The accompanying ormolu and white marble candelabra feature Bacchic children, based on 18th-century models by Clodion. Each holding two arms of light, dressed in panther skins and vine branches, with a wineskin at their feet. Biography: At the turn of the 20th century, Gilbert Fabre was one of the world's leading makers of fine bronzes. Equally important was the production of clocks and trimmings, whose clock movements were supplied by Samuel Marti, which had set up shop on rue Charlot in Paris as early as 1860. In 1919, Gilbert Fabre sold his company to Chardon, an art foundry that had been based in Belgium since 1878. Bibliography : Dictionnaire des horlogers Français, Tardy, 1971, p°219.
