CHRISTOFLE - IMPORTANT SOLID SILVER CENTERPIECE XIXTH CENTURY Solid silver round centerpiece, standing on scrolled sabot feet. The subject is a decoration of sheep and bulls' heads framing a sculpture of a Shepherd dressed in antique style, probably CERES, symbolizing earthly fertility. The sculpture rests on a fluted, leafy base with a cornucopia-shaped socket. Dimensions: height 58 cm - Diameter of base 52 X 50 CM Material : 1st quality silver 950/°°. Weight : 12 kilos approx. Marked : MINERVE Period : Second half of the 19th century Goldsmith : CHRISTOFLE in PARIS Origin : France/PARIS Starting in 1870, the French Ministry of Agriculture instituted a competition between the greatest French silversmiths for the creation of silver pieces given to the winners of the Agricultural Exhibitions, and CHRISTOFLE took part.
