EUGENE CORNU - PAIR OF ALGERIAN ONYX AND BRONZE VASES 19th CENTURY EUGENE CORNU BRONZIER SCULPTEUR 19th CENTURY Important pair of Algerian onyx vases with ormolu and chased bronze mounts and handles, decorated in blue and turquoise cloisonné enamel with dragons and flowers in reserves. Signed on the grip ring. Dimensions: Height 31 cm - Neck diameter Diameter at neck 22.5 cm - Diameter at handles 35 cm . Material : Algerian onyx & bronze Period : 19th century Circa 1875-1880 Signature : E. Cornu bld des Italiens 24 Origin : France - PARIS Eugène CORNU, sculptor-decorator who became the creator and director of the Compagnie des Marbres et Onyx d'Algérie of A. Pallu & Co, then his successor G. Viot. This company specialized in luxury items combining Algerian onyx, bronze and champlevé enamels. Cornu then became director of the company that took his name. After his death in 1875, H. Journet took over under his name. Cornu's creations were exhibited at the 1862 and 1871-1872 London and 1867 Paris World's Fairs, where he was awarded a gold medal for an important pair of vases in onyx, bronze and enamel. The Compagnie des Marbres et Onyx d'Algérie also produced objects based on models by Albert Carrier-Belleuse, Charles Cordier and Louis-Alfred Barrias. In 1878, its stores were located at 24, boulevard des Italiens, Paris.
