KEITH HARING Very nice original drawing by Keith Haring dating from 1984. Felt-tip pen on paper. Provenance: Private collection of Angel Ortiz Biography of the artist: Keith HARING was an American artist born in 1958 who died in 1990. He belongs to the Figuration Libre movement. He begins his art studies in 1976 in Pittsburgh and New York, showing a particular interest in semiotics and always looking for ways to use language and handwriting in his drawing. Pierre Alechinsky, Matisse, Jean Dubuffet and Christo are his artistic references. He uses the line as a guide of expression. He develops his own unique vocabulary and style by combining the geometric lines, symbols and hieroglyphs. Keith Haring is an artist grounded in reality. The themes that he addresses in his work range from technology to TV evangelism to sexuality to greed and poverty, violence and racism. He finds his first medium for creative expression in the empty advertising spaces of the New York subway. He literally floods them with drawings, including the famous "radiant baby''. This earns him the attention of Andy Warhol and art dealer Tony Shafrazi. The latter offered him his first major exhibition, the beginning of his international career. At the same time he assiduously socialises with Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol. Together they give the artistic world a new impetus. In 1986, Haring opens the "Pop Shop" in Soho. It is in this fully black and white painted store that he sells T-shirts, toys, posters and all sorts of items based on his works, making art accessible to a wider public. Keith Haring is also a great cultural activist. He is committed against the spread of AIDS and is fighting for the rights of homosexuals against social discrimination.
