Gilded copper Christ with champlevé enamel. Limoges. France. Romanesque. 13th century. Christ is crucified, alive, covered by a long lapis lazuli blue loincloth and an unusual belt, which rather than being enamelled, which would be more typical, is decorated with hammering on the gilded copper and falls to the feet. Crowned and with glass eyes. There are slight flaws in the enamel and gilding, the right hand is incomplete and there is a small break in the lower edge. Provenance: acquired in Christie's London on 2/7/1996. Comparative literature: F. Stohlman ."Gli Smalti del Museo Sacro Vaticano".
