CHARLES TICHON
Cycles Brion. 1897. SIZE: 23 1/2 x 31 3/4 in./59.7 x 80.7 cm PRINTER: Imp. Bouquet & Barry, Paris DESCRIPTION: In the 1870s, the French wine industry was decimated by an outbreak of phylloxera, resulting in many châteaux selling their vineyards in the face of bankruptcy. One of those parcels belonged to the Comte de la Basse-Brion, who took the sale price of his land, moved to Paris, and invested in the new technology of bicycle manufacturing. This is the smaller-format version of the poster. (Art Nouveau; Bicycles)
