Georges Penvent
Gitane. ca. 1950s. SIZE: 21 3/4 x 29 7/8 in./55.2 x 75.7 cm DESCRIPTION: To prove just how far Gitane has developed its line, Penvent contrasts an outmoded high wheeler with a blink-and-you'll-miss-her motorcycle rider. But he also borrows a trope from the history of bicycle posters: the incredibly stylish lady who probably shouldn't have worn her longest, flowiest frock for the occasion. Gitane, (which means "gypsy"), got its start in 1925, and motorcycles were added to the line in the 1950s. Though their motorbikes moved to other companies, Gitane still builds their aluminum and steel bicycles in their original factory. (Modern; Bicycles; Motorcycles)
