LE THI LUU / LE LỰU LỰU (1911-1988) Wearing Duong Thi Nhung (1927-1975), sister of Dương Bích Liên (1924-1988) Oil on canvas Signed and dated lower left: 1956 27 x 22 cm Note : > Duong Thi Nhung (born in Hanoi on 04/11/1927 and died in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, lez 28/11/1975) was born into a family of intellectuals and mandarins. His brother, Dương Bích Liên (1924-1988), is known to have been a great painter and member, more withdrawn by his reserved temperament, of the "Four Pillars" group, alongside Bùi Xuân Phái (1920-1988) and Nguyễn Sáng (1923-1988). Distant and tormented, the latter only conceived painting as a vital act. His only public action was his participation in the Nhan Van Giai Pham movement. > We present here a work executed by one of the rare women students of the School of Fine Arts of Indochina, directed by Victor Tardieu and located in Hanoi, and the first to have embarked on a career as a professional artist-painter: Le Thi Luu. This is one of the quartets of the four Vietnamese painters who settled in France in the 1930s alongside Mai Trung Thu, Le Pho and Vu Cao Dam. She particularly devoted herself to painting women and children. Its style, moreover, is perfectly adapted to it: soft lines and light colours, in particular. Provenance: > Old collection of Duong Thi Nhung, Paris; > Work remaining in the family by descent, Paris. Comparison: Another portrait painted of the same model, this one by the artist Hoàng Lap Ngôn (1910-2006), is kept in the Museum of Fine Arts in Hanoi City. It is reproduced in the following book: CAO TRONG THIEM. "Vietnam Fine Arts Museum, Bao Tang My Thuat Viet Nam". Vietnam Fine Arts Museum publisher: 1999.
