ITALIE, MILIEU DU XVIIIe SIÈCLE PAIR OF ACUTE RARES Cartapesta H. 57 cm. Missing and old restorations. These ewers, gilded or lacquered in shades of green on a cream background, were made using the cartapesta or "papier-mâché" technique used in Italy in the 17th and 18th centuries. The overflow and handle, of baroque design, flanked by seated satyrs holding a garland; the belly with reserves painted with fantastic, oriental and arabesque bird motifs centred on a flat medallion with a historical scene or a female mascaron; circular pedestal with a godred ring.
