BARBEY D'AUREVILLY, Jules.
Memoranda. Paris, impr. Lahure pour Rouveyre, 1883. In-12 (186 x 110 mm) of an engraved frontispiece portrait, 2 ff.n.ch., XXVII pp., 2 ff.n.ch., 152 pp., 1 f.n.ch.; red half-chagrin with corners, back with nerves, golden head, cover and preserved backs (Canape).
Original edition, copy of the current edition on Dutch paper.
Portrait engraved with an autograph (to the Baroness of Bouglon?): "To you, cruel and inaccessible, who know & love the work, and will say, if the man, through these lines, appears to you as you would have guessed. Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly".
Memoranda includes two newspapers that the author kept and dedicated to his closest friends (Maurice de Guérin, Trebutien) and his "fiancée" (Baroness de Bouglon), even if these texts, paradoxically, were intended to be read and published.
Cover and back washed and glued, false title and title washed heavily; another autographed letter became almost unreadable, and the red of the words Memoranda on the title page left, leaving the word in grey.
