STYLE REGENCE Pair of candlesticks "À LA BÉRAIN" Gilt bronze H. 24,5 cm, W.12,5 cm This pair of candlesticks has barrels with a tripartite decoration in the Bérain style. Jean Bérain (1640-1711), a famous ornamentalist during the reign of Louis XIV, became the draughtsman of the King's Chamber and Cabinet in 1674. In this context, he became famous for having renewed the theme of the grotesques dear to the 16th century and to the School of Fontainebleau. Having a pronounced taste for the great classical architecture, it results in centred compositions, framed by porticoes or mantling and decorated with arabesques as in this case.
