FRANCE - ÉPOQUE RÉGENCE Pair of armchairs circa 1720 Gilded wood and tapestry in petit point H. 110 cm, W. 75 cm, D. 60 cm This pair of armchairs in carved and gilded wood has a high backrest slightly inclined and curved at the top. The all-round curved belt is elegantly embellished with leafy shells on a latticework background. The legs are carved with scraps of mantling and acanthus leaves and end in scrolls. The whole is covered with a tapestry in petit point from the same period with a motif of poppies and burst pomegranates. This wide armchair model bears witness to the evolution of seating in the twilight of the Louis XIV era and at the beginning of the Regency period. From the style of the previous century, the high, wide, inclined and entirely fabric-covered backrests, the general rectilinear shape or the use of motifs such as the mantling are preserved. However, new elements are integrated into these elements, such as the belt, which is apparent and provided with a charming ornamentation, feet lightened by a curvature replacing the console or baluster feet. This happy marriage between the rigour of the 17th century and the nascent softness of the following century creates here a very elegant model.
