Jean PESKE (Golta 1870 - Le Mans 1949) Children of the artist in the park Circa 1910 Oil on cardboard 50 x 64 cm Signed lower left " Peské " Jean Peské is a French painter, engraver, illustrator of Polish origin by his father and Russian by his mother. After studying at the School of Painting in Kiev, then at the School of Fine Arts in Odessa and Warsaw, he leaves for Paris in 1891 to continue his training at the Julian Academy in the workshops of Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. Jean Peské drew closer to the Pointillists and in particular to Signac with whom he went to Saint-Tropez in 1893. He also became friends with Sérusier and the Nabis, with whom he exhibited at Le Barc de Boutteville until 1896. Peské lived in Montmartre, did decorative work, illustration projects and frequented cabarets and café theatres. In 1905 he moved to Bois-le-Roi, painted trees in the forest of Fontainebleau and members of his family. Peské travelled regularly to the South of France, notably to Collioure and Bormes where he painted nature, the sea and family scenes with a very colourful palette. In 1926 and 1927, he stayed in the Vendée and painted many landscapes. He exhibited at the Salon d'Automne from 1905 to 1945, at the Salon des Tuileries from 1924 to 1949 and at the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts until 1938. Numerous exhibitions are devoted to him notably in 1909, 1913, 1921 at the Devambez Gallery, at the Bernheim Gallery in 1909, in 1921, 1922, 1931, 1972 at the Durand-Ruel Gallery and at the Jean-Claude Bellier Gallery devoted exhibitions to him in 1967, 1969, 1970 and 1990.
