Important and elegant TAPIS D'AUBUSSON (France), Napoleon III period.
A magnificent bouquet of peonies sits at the centre of an oval medallion with delicate flowering stems. Each cardinal point is enriched by scallops with garlands of flowers. This oblong medallion is itself placed on an old pink field, surrounded by a celadon green frame with leafy arabesques. Four exuberant multicoloured bouquets with ribbons embellish the corners. The dark wine-red border is adorned with scrolled branches and floral bouquets. Tobacco outer frame with a succession of pearls. This "design" was intended to be a reflection of the mouldings drawn on the ceilings of the bourgeois houses for which these carpets were intended.
