"Chair of Saint Peter". Carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculpture. Navarra School - Rioja Alta. Romanesque. 13th century. Saint Peter the Apostle, the first Pope, a martyr of Nero’s empire somewhere between 64 and 67AD. Ever since the earliest depictions of the saint he has always been portrayed as a mature man, perhaps the oldest of the apostles, with a rounded, grey beard and circular hair. In this case he is depicted with pontifical ornaments and a mitre on his head. Images in which he is dressed in this way and seated on his throne are known as "Chair of Saint Peter". The hands are missing, in one of them he would have held the keys to Heaven, his attribute. 98 x 32 x 24 cm.
