"Saint Agatha". Sculpted stone figure with polychrome and gilt residue. France. Possibly Lorraine. Gothic. 14th century.
Magnificent example of French gothic imagery. The saint’s marvellous face, chased with fine features, is outstanding and gives the image great sweetness and realism.
The saint, the virgin martyr of Catania, was martyred in the mid-third century. She was tortured by having her breasts pulled off with pincers. She is depicted, in our sculpture, dressed in rich clothing, as is customary, showing a breast and what appears to be part of a pincer, the instrument of her martyrdom. In her left hand she holds the book of the Holy Scriptures.
Some flaws. Height: 90 cm.
