"Mary Magdalene". Carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculpture. Italy. Renaissance. Circa 1500.Elegant sculpture showing Mary Magdalene in one of her three well-known depictions – wearing a luxurious courtly dress, holding the jar of perfume which is her constant attribute. Her elaborate clothing is truly outstanding. It consists of a green toned dress with gilded brocades and embossed sleeves, and a red and gilded cloak which is gracefully gathered up in her arms and covers her to her feet. The saint wears an unusual headdress in the Italian style, and has long locks of curly hair which fall to her waist, framing her lovely face. Provenance: Martí Mas Tubau collection, Barcelona.
