Imposing carved, gilded, silvered and polychromed relief. Castilian School. Renaissance. Early 16th century. Relief which illustrates the moment in which Jesus is flogged, after appearing before Pontius Pilate. He is depicted as naked apart from a loin cloth, standing, and tied to a column by his hands. He is in the centre of the scene, with a severe expression, yet still communicating deep sadness. He appears to be resigned to the flogging which He is going to be given by His tormenters, who stand to each side of him, lifting their arms, wielding their canes, while a third is finishing tying Christ’s feet to the column. The four figures and the column are mid-relief, and of great volume. There is a second level in bas-relief which has marvellous architectural decoration with pricked and “estofado” motifs in the gold leaf base. In both levels the sculpting and the chromatic variety give movement and depth to the scene. The relief was made by a great sculptor and is, undoubtedly, a magnificent example of Spanish renaissance imagery. Great skill can be appreciated in the treatment of the anatomy of the figures, giving the group great expressivity and realism. There is magnificent ornamentation of the soldiers’ clothes with polychrome, gilding and silvering. 99,5 x 80,5 x 8 cm.
