A German war hammer, circa 1500
The rectangular thrusting blade mounted on an octagonal shaft. Three circular marks stamped into one side of the crescent-shaped blade, the rectangular hammer head with three sturdy flukes. The socket with two side flukes. The four broad side straps with dot and slit-shaped perforations, underlaid in sheet brass. The original, rectangular shaft in blackened hardwood, the edges with delicately stippled ornamental décor. Length 189 cm.
A pole axe with similarly perforated side straps can be found in the collection of the German Historical Museum in Berlin (W 59.218).
Provenance: Ex. Eustruch collection, Barcelona, prior to 1896.

Condition Report:
Overall in good condition. Minimal notching on the cutting edge of the blade, pitting on the spike and socket caused by parrying with enemy weapons.
