A MONUMENTAL ICON SHOWING THE HODIGITRIA MOTHER OF GOD Greek, about 1500 tempera on wood panel. Finely executed on a gold ground. The Mother of God portrayed half-length, looking at the beholder, supporting Christ on her left forearm. The garments of the Mother of God coloured in deep red. Christ's orange himation highlighted with dense chrysography. Minor losses to the borders. 77 x 59.5 cm.
MONUMENTAL ICON WITH THE MOTHER OF GOD HODEGETRIA Greece, c. 1500 Picture field joined together from two boards with two nailed-on back-sponki. Egg tempera on chalk ground, background gilt. 77 x 59.5 cm. The Mother of God, shown almost frontally in half-length figure, holds the Christ Boy in her left hand while she points to him with her right hand. Christ holds a closed scroll. He has raised his right hand in a gesture of blessing. Fine elaboration and shading of the incarnate parts. Min. loss of substance in the marginal area.
