A LARGE AND FINE ICON SHOWING THE MOTHER OF GOD OF YAROSLAVL WITH A SILVER RIZA Russian, early 17th century (icon), Russian, Moscow, Ivan Ivanovitch Ovchinnikov, 1876 (riza) Tempera on wood panel with purple silk backing Portrayed half-length, in three-quarter view, with her right hand supporting the Child, embracing and bringing him closer to her, leaning forward to touch his face, him in response stretching his neck in order to reach his Mother's cheek, grasping the edge of her maphorion. Christ rendered in a serpentine position with his back to the viewer and his legs crossed, holding a closed scroll. The maphorion in carmine embellished with a golden hem and fringes, Christ's himation and chiton decorated with intense chrysography. Overlaid with a chased silver riza, decorated with strapwork and flowers. Applied with an engraved plaque: This Riza was donated by the Archimandrite Nikodim in 1876. on the back old paper label: From the shop of V.V. Degtjarjow. Below probably price: 1 f and 86 m. At the upper right side with a pencil: To Archimandrite Nikodim von Klamm. The silver riza marked with city hallmark, assayer's mark, 84 standard and master's mark 'IO' in Cyrillic. Minor vertical crack, areas of old retouching. 41.5 x 33.8 cm. Fabric cover on verso. Kovcheg, egg tempera on chalk ground, chrysography. Silver, chased and engraved. 41.5 x 33.8 cm. Decorated with town mark, hallmark, fineness '84' and master mark 'IO' in Cyrillic. Plaque with engraved inscription applied to the front of the riza: This Riza was donated by the Archimandrite Nikodim in 1876. On the back old paper stickers: From the shop of V.V. Degtyaryov.
