The larger-than-life sized head of a Dvarapala, Mon Dvaravati (Thailand), 8th/9th century
The head hewn in one piece out of greyish sandstone with a beautiful aged patina. The round, smiling face with prominent lips, a broad nose, downcast eyes and elongated earlobes. Finely curled hairstyle, wearing a five-pointed crown on his head. The chignon, only fragments of which are still preserved, bound with a ribbon. Mounted on a modern stand. Height 44.5 cm, overall height 58 cm.
