COURIER (Paul-Louis). Unpublished memoirs, correspondence and opuscules. Paris, Sautelet et Cie, Alexandre Mesnier, 1828. 2 volumes in-8, paperback, printed pink paper cover, modern folders and case. Partly original edition. Some letters and miscellaneous of these famous literary opuscules appear here for the first time. Copy as it appeared, paperback and untrimmed under printed cover. Pale wetness touching the last 10 leaves of Volume I. Small reinforcement of thin Japanese paper on the back of volume II. Enclosed is an L.A.S. of Courier, dated April 16, 1794 from the Blies-Castel camp (one and a half pages in-8). In the spring of that year 1794, Courier left the garrison of Thionville to be employed in the Moselle army, which he joined at the Blies-Castel camp. It was then that he saw war for the first time and learned to sleep in the bivouac next to his guns (Memoirs, vol. I, p. 19).
