"Saint Catherine of Alexandria." Carved, gilded and polychromed wooden sculpture. Hispanic-Flemish School. Gothic, 15th century.
She is depicted standing on the head of King Maxentius, who she refused to marry when he asked her to renounce her faith. She is dressed in noblewoman's clothing and wears a crown. She is very beautiful, in accordance with legend. The sculptural work is very fine, and the chromatic richness is also outstanding, with attention to the minutest details such as the lace on the fine blouse that is under her dress, or the decoration of the interior of the sleeves, which simulates ermine.
Height: 118 cm.
This carving has similarities, in our opinion, to another smaller Saint Catherine, also from the 15th century, which is kept at the Diocesan Museum of Sacred Art in Bilbao.
