BERNSTEIN Leonard (1918-1990).
MANUSCRIT MUSICAL autograph signed, Trio op. 2 " Violin ", 1936; 4 pages in-fol. (a few
small slits).
Manuscript of the violin part of his Trio with piano, one of
Bernstein's
very first works
.
The Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano dates back to Bernstein's days as a Harvard student and pupil of Walter Piston, some eight years before his first great success with the musical On the Town (1944), which features the opening of the Trio's second movement. Unknown and unpublished during the composer's lifetime, the Trio Op. 2 is an ambitious, even prophetic work by the young composer.
The Trio
was not
published until
1979 and
consists of three movements: I Andante non troppo; II Tempo di marcia; III Largo, then Allegro
ritmico.
The manuscript is written in black ink on 12-line paper (6 systems of 2 staves), with some erasures and corrections. It is signed and dated at the end "Leonard Bernstein Oct.-Nov. 1936". It bears a few pencil annotations by the violinist
.
